I have to admit that I am a massive fan of Indian Idol. Beyond the surface-level entertainment, there is something so deeply moving about the orchestration, the sincerity of the instrument players, and the amount of efforts singers put into making a classic song their own.
Even if we look past the commercial side of things, the real value for me lies in the presence of specially invited legends, the actors, musicians, and directors who share rare, original stories from their era. These are the kinds of stories you won’t find anywhere else.
In addition to that when you think about the mountainous efforts the team behind the camera puts in to bring these moments to life, it really is staggering.
On a personal level, I love watching the show with the sound turned up high. I often find myself "freaking out" and singing along with the contestants, either out loud or in my head when they hit those high pitches with twists. It makes me realize how beautifully and meaningfully those lyrics were woven together. Hats off to the lyricists of that era.
What is most fascinating to me is that even though I didn’t grow up with social media or an MP3 player / musical apps glued to my hand, I still remember the entire length of almost every song. This led me to a sudden realization about why these eminent personalities are invited and hence why these old songs are performed.
It’s a way to keep our memory cells active. It’s a service to my generation and the ones before me, helping our minds stay sharp while the industry discovers new "diamonds" in the music world.
As a hardcore researcher, I live by the statement that "your work should be useful for society at large." Suddenly, I saw the mapping. There is a direct connection between this musical preservation and societal well-being. Finding that link between my hobby and my professional mindset made me feel absolutely over the top of the world.
Well, sometimes, the most profound research happens right in our living rooms.
