2009: Prescription

Prior to welcoming my twins to this world, obviously, there were many rounds of doctor visits involved. Thereafter, during my legs episode too, many doctor visits showcased the use of properly printed prescription letters or pages. Some of the doctors have their assistance who will fill up the previous visit’s details, then kick starts the current discussion.

Similarly, when the PhD guide meets his / her scholars, why not create and maintain the file of prescriptions? Guide should not wait, but print one such letterhead by making it in Canva and xeroxing it; keep it ready. The scholar may keep them so that before the next visit or meeting, the scholar will fill up publication status details, conference, grant, patent, data, collaboration details, etc. so that further directions can be given. Instead of writing in a register, in an online mode, or on plain paper, a professional approach will prove more useful. Scholars need to maintain this file and bring it during discussion every time. Guide needs to make sure to prescribe less or moderate medicines; no overdose, please.

If required, now a days in the market, carbon copy papers are also available, so guide-scholar duo may opt to use such paper so as to have two copies of the same prescription.

In this multitasking world, making use of such printed prescriptions, writing on a piece of paper will help guide and the scholar, with reduced screen time and no need to recollect or remember anything about every individual research. Generally all the PhD guides are teachers, hence there will be no issue with the handwriting as with doctors, the medical professionals.

I sincerely believe properly written prescriptions for scholars will prove a great initiative.

If PhD guides will start using prescriptions which  will generally have the next date of meeting or any objectives to fulfil with a specific date, etc., so everything will be transparently documented. I am aware of a few handful guides jot down the minutes of meeting or points etc. for their scholars, but if every guide will do it then the productivity will increase for sure.
