2082: Ignorance is Bliss

A professor, a hotel singer, and a world-renowned classical musician have all taught me invaluable lessons. My professor had been imparting this lesson for years, though it took time for me to grasp the deeper meaning behind it. This particular professor—brilliant, famous, and extraordinarily wise—had a unique approach. He would often teach with his eyes closed, opening them only occasionally. He paid no mind to students who might be daydreaming or ignoring his words; he simply focused on delivering his lesson. He was there to teach, and that alone was his purpose.

Recently, I watched the latest season of Indian Idol on Sony. One contestant, an immensely talented singer with a foundation in folk music, shared that he performs regularly with his troupe at hotels. Yet, despite their skill, their music is often treated as mere background noise, unnoticed by guests. They aren’t even acknowledged, he said. But they find motivation within themselves, enjoy each other’s company, and fulfill their duty to perform, regardless of the audience’s attention.

This lesson came full circle when I attended a Diwali morning music retreat, where a world-class classical musician performed. Amidst the distractions of people moving around, snapping photos, chatting, and scrolling through their phones, he remained entirely unbothered. He was deeply immersed in his art, finding fulfillment in the music itself, focused on his craft and class rather than the response of those around him.

As a teacher, I sometimes feel distracted or disheartened without my students’ undivided attention. But these examples have shown me the beauty of staying focused on one’s purpose, regardless of external distractions. Indeed, ignorance is bliss. Focus on your duty and let go of the rest.
