2381: An Unexpected Treasure

I am deeply fascinated by the concept of "fragrance." Perhaps that is why, knowingly or unknowingly, it often finds a way into my writing. Today was one such day. Even though I was caught up in the middle of a very busy schedule, a particular aroma caught my attention it was so excellent and unique that it felt like finding a sudden treasure.

It so happened that I bought some sweet potatoes, washed them clean, and put them in the pressure cooker to boil. I had a mind to make something different today. While the cooker was on, I was busy multitasking as usual. But the moment I opened the lid, I stood completely still, like a statue.

The reason was the aroma. It was such an outstanding and unexpected fragrance—"Ahaha!" truly wonderful. It was so out of this world that I knew, even before tasting, how high the quality and sweetness of those sweet potatoes must be. That realization gave me a different kind of "josh" (energy) to prepare the dish. And indeed, the final dish turned out to be incredibly delicious.

I couldn't help but think: a huge thank you to the farmer who planted them, the soil that nourished them, the wind that helped them grow, and all the other best elements of nature. That fragrance was telling me a story about this entire "team." It was an experience that is hard to put into words. I never knew that a simple sweet potato could have such a magnificent smell. I really enjoyed it.

To this day, I am deeply moved by the smell of fresh milk boiling, the unique scents in a science lab, the "Mridgandh" (smell of earth) when rain hits the soil, the aroma of my mother’s simple dal (amti), and the smell of fresh ghee melting on hot Puranpoli. These fragrances give me so much inspiration; they force me to do every task with my full involvement and heart.
